Discover Similan Thai Restaurant

Walking into Similan Thai Restaurant feels like stepping into a neighborhood spot that locals quietly guard as their go-to for comfort food done right. I first stopped by on a busy weeknight after a surf session nearby, expecting a quick dinner, and ended up staying longer than planned just to work through the menu. Located at 141 Lomas Santa Fe Dr, Solana Beach, CA 92075, United States, the restaurant sits in an easy-to-miss plaza, yet once inside, the aromas make it clear why the place stays busy.

The menu leans classic, which I appreciate. Instead of chasing trends, it focuses on dishes that have stood the test of time in Thai kitchens. Pad Thai arrives with springy rice noodles, a balanced tamarind sweetness, and just enough char from the wok. I once asked the server how they keep flavors so consistent, and she explained their process is rooted in cooking sauces fresh daily rather than relying on pre-made bases. That extra step shows. According to culinary research published by the Thai Trade Center, freshly prepared curry pastes retain more volatile aroma compounds, which directly affects depth of flavor, and that’s something you can taste here.

Curries deserve special mention. The green curry has a clean heat that builds slowly, while the massaman is richer, almost stew-like, with tender chunks of beef. A friend of mine who studied culinary arts in Bangkok pointed out that proper massaman should balance spices like cinnamon and cardamom without overwhelming the coconut milk. That balance is nailed here. If you’re new to Thai food, the staff will happily explain spice levels in plain language, which makes ordering feel less intimidating.

Beyond entrées, the restaurant handles small details well. Soups come out steaming hot, and salads are crisp, not overdressed. The tom yum, in particular, delivers that sharp, citrusy punch from fresh lemongrass and lime leaves. Research from the Journal of Food Science notes that these herbs also have antimicrobial properties, traditionally valued in Southeast Asian cooking, which adds cultural context to what might otherwise feel like just another soup.

Reviews around town often mention consistency, and I’d agree. I’ve eaten here during quiet afternoons and packed weekend evenings, and the food quality holds steady. That reliability matters. The National Restaurant Association has reported that consistency is one of the top factors influencing repeat visits, and it’s easy to see why regulars keep coming back. Portions are generous without feeling sloppy, making it a solid choice whether you’re dining in or grabbing takeout.

Service matches the food’s easygoing vibe. Orders are taken efficiently, questions are answered honestly, and there’s no pressure to rush. One server once recommended a lesser-known stir-fry when I wanted something lighter, and it turned into a new favorite. Moments like that build trust, especially for diners who care about authentic flavors but don’t want a lecture with their meal.

Location-wise, being in Solana Beach makes it convenient for locals and visitors alike. Parking is straightforward, and the surrounding area has a laid-back coastal feel that pairs well with a relaxed dinner. While the restaurant doesn’t position itself as upscale, it doesn’t need to. The focus is clearly on food and familiarity.

There are a few limitations worth noting. Seating can feel tight during peak hours, and wait times stretch on weekends. Also, while the menu covers most staples, diners looking for regional Thai specialties beyond central Thai cuisine might find the selection narrower. Still, for a dependable Thai restaurant with thoughtful cooking, friendly service, and a menu that respects tradition, this spot earns its reputation through everyday execution rather than hype.

  • Best Thai food in Solana Beach, and some of the best Thai food I've ever had. We've had chicken satay, green curry, pad thai, pad see ew, and probably other dishes here I can't remember. I wouldn't call the service friendly, but the usual hostess/waitress is adequate. I'm fine with this. However, we arrived around 2 pm on a Friday afternoon and had a terrible different waitress who seemed stressed and was unwelcoming. I understand they close at 3 pm, but there were maybe only 4 other parties dining in who were almost done. She didn't bring us water for a while, and seemed annoyed by us letting our toddler walk around supervised. The customers at the two tables next to us were very friendly and didn't mind his presence, but she made us seem like an inconvenience.

  • We organized birthday dinner for 18 people with the manager/owner "O". He and his staff helped make it a very enjoyable occasion for all of us. They accommodated all our requests and the food was amazing. We eat a lot of Thai food around town and their food was authentic and absolutely delicious. The portions we generous and service excellent. Honestly, I did not want to write this review as this gem of a restaurant is too good to share as we won't get a reservation in the future. Thank you "O" for a wonderful time.

  • Nice Thai place, good location, good parking space (store front). Tried noodle, curry, and specialty dishes. Generally well cooked, full of flavor, okay portion. I'd like to see more fresh seafood ingredients for the specialty dish, but can't complain per inflation... Not a perfect spot, but can't go wrong for sure.

  • We ordered half-sweet pad see ew and green curry. Both taste pretty good. Although the half sweet was still quite sweet to us, but generally still tasted good

  • We dined in there for a party of three and the food was outstanding. The portion is very generous as you can see in the pictures and the taste is great for all dishes we ordered. Similan Thai restaurant may not be the most authentic Thai restaurant, but it has a lot to offer! I can say it is one of the best Thai restaurants in the area

  • A solid Thai spot with good portions and well-made dishes. Nothing mind-blowing but everything hit the spot. Panang Curry: Get Definitely the best thing we had. Rich, creamy, and packed with flavor. The chicken was tender and the sauce went great with rice. Glass Noodles with Chicken: Maybe? Nice texture and a light, savory flavor. It was enjoyable, but I usually prefer pad see ew or something a little heartier. Just a personal preference. Papaya Salad: Maybe This one came out very spicy. That was expected, but the balance was off for me. Not enough sweetness or tang to round it out. Still refreshing though. The service was friendly and the place felt clean and relaxed. Pricing was fair for the portions and overall quality. Food: 7/10 Service: 6/10 Atmosphere: 7/10 Value: 7/10
